Wiccan / Pagan Reference The works of Scott Cunningham. A wonderful collection of books suited for beginners and Solitaries, his works have been the most influential on my path. He is greatly missed. There is a direct link to a three in one book below. This is the book that was the basis of my learning when I first started learning about Wicca. Survival / Prepping/ Homesteading The Art and Science of Dumpster Diving by John Hoffman. Can be found at scribd.com and Armageddon Online, this book details the author's happy life as a dumpster diver, how it helped his family survive, and the valuable assets that are thrown away each day. Chock full of helpful tips, sound advice, and great humor, it will have you on the ground laughing. If you've ever gone around town during spring cleaning and found something worth picking up and fixing, you should read this book! I also included the Amazon link in case you prefer to not deal with scribd.com I also have a few lists on Amazon.com, some with books. Just search for [email protected] Fiction Jacqueline Carey's Naamah's Trilogy. If you like romance or fantasy novels, this is for you!! Carey has created such a lush world, and each time I read any of her books, it brings tears to my eyes. I hope to read her Kushiel's series as well, which is set a few generations before the Naamah's Trilogy. If you have read them, please give me a review!! Tamora Pierce's book sets. Weither it is the quartets from Alanna the Lioness, Wildmage, Protector of the Small, The Trickster's dual book set, or The Emelan Saga, among many others, these books are filled with fantasy and magic, new beginnings and dreams, and a common thread of duty, responsibility, and kindness towards others, and are perfect for young teens and adults alike. Most of The Circle books hold some very good ideas on different magics that can be worked with common day things, while maybe not in as showy a fashion, and can be adapted to fit into lesson plans for young seekers. Some of her books do hold some more mature ideas and concepts that may not make them perfect for younger children, but don't discount them. Dies the Fire by S. M. Stirling It is a very awesome look at a future where all technology has become inert and unusable, and the properties of gun powder and other explosives have been changed so that they no longer burn properly. Some of the main characters are part of a Wiccan coven, and the author has done plenty of research and does a good job of accurately portraying them. All in all a very good book, and I'm very excited to read The Protector's War too.-Update 12-2015: I have continued to read the series through several more books, and it is a very good read. While the tone seems to have slowed down a bit between books, the first 3 are my very favorites. The premise of an alternate history starting a few years before 2000 is very intriguing, and while some might argue that Stirling is being over the top, the assessment of human nature that these books present seem to be very accurate in my opinion. It also is a bit enlightening to read these books as a way to look at how very far technology has progressed in such a short amount of time, and if that is really a good thing. A very memorable scene in the series has the Protector truly wondering if DVDs would have replaced VHS tapes as a means of recording movies. And now, regular DVDs are almost obsolete hardly 15-20 years after the year the first book is set in. This book set is a very good read, and has a very important message that everyone can benefit from: No matter how lucky you are now, the dice have no memory.... The works of Garth Nix, which are completely awesome. I love the Abhorson trilogy, along with the companion books, and the Keys to the Kingdom books are really cool, I'm currently on Lady Friday. All in all, he has a very fluid mind, and creates believable worlds that I love to get lost in! |
